Legal Psilocybin in Colorado: What You Need to Know
Colorado has created one of the first regulated pathways in the United States for adults to legally access psilocybin in a supported setting. But understanding what “legal psilocybin” actually means in Colorado can be confusing.
Is Psilocybin Legal in Colorado?
Yes, but with important distinctions.
Colorado law provides two different pathways involving psilocybin for adults age 21 and older: personal use and regulated natural medicine services.
Under Colorado’s personal-use provisions, adults 21 and older may possess, consume, cultivate, and share natural medicine within limits established by state law. These protections do not create a retail market for psilocybin. The commercial sale of natural medicine remains prohibited.
Colorado has also established a regulated natural medicine program. Through this system, adults 21 and older can receive psilocybin services under the supervision of a licensed natural medicine facilitator. Regulated services include preparation, an administration session in which the participant consumes natural medicine, and integration following the experience.
This distinction matters. When you work with a licensed facilitator through Colorado’s regulated program, you are participating in a state-regulated system with licensing requirements, screening and preparation requirements, rules governing administration sessions, and professional standards for facilitators.
Psilocybin remains illegal under federal law. Colorado’s laws and regulations govern what is permitted under Colorado state law.
How Does Colorado’s Regulated Natural Medicine Program Work?
Colorado’s regulated natural medicine program provides a structured pathway for adults 21 and older to participate in psilocybin services with a licensed natural medicine facilitator.
The process is more involved than simply scheduling a psilocybin session. Regulated services are designed as a sequence that includes preparation, administration, and integration.
Licensed Facilitators and Healing Centers
Colorado’s regulated system separates the role of the licensed natural medicine facilitator from the role of the licensed healing center.
A licensed natural medicine facilitator is the professional who works directly with the participant through preparation, the administration session, and integration.
A licensed healing center is a state-licensed location authorized to provide natural medicine services. Healing centers may obtain regulated natural medicine from a licensed cultivator or manufacturer and provide it to participants for consumption during an administration session.
Facilitators may work independently and provide services at licensed healing centers rather than being employees of, or permanently affiliated with, a single center. This means you can choose a facilitator based on their experience, approach, and fit, and the facilitator can coordinate with an appropriate licensed location for the administration session.
Preparation
Before an administration session, you meet with your facilitator for preparation. This includes required screening and informed consent as well as conversations about your intentions, relevant history, expectations, safety considerations, and what you may encounter during the experience.
Administration
Psilocybin is consumed during an administration session at a licensed healing center or other location authorized under Colorado’s regulated program. A licensed facilitator remains present and supervises the session for the required duration.
The facilitator’s role is not to direct or control the psychedelic experience. Facilitation can include maintaining a safe and supportive environment, attending to the participant’s needs, and responding appropriately if additional support is needed.
Integration
Following the administration session, integration provides an opportunity to reflect on the experience and consider how it relates to your life. Integration does not require arriving at a particular interpretation, outcome, or set of changes. The experience belongs to the participant, and integration can take different forms depending on the individual.
Together, preparation, administration, and integration create the basic structure of regulated psilocybin services in Colorado.
Do I Have to Live in Colorado to Access Legal Psilocybin Services?
No. You do not have to be a Colorado resident to participate in regulated natural medicine services in Colorado.
Adults age 21 and older may travel to Colorado from another state, or country, to work with a licensed natural medicine facilitator and participate in psilocybin services through Colorado’s regulated Natural Medicine Program.
This makes Colorado one of the few places in the United States where people can travel to access psilocybin within a state-regulated system.
If you are traveling from out of state, planning involves more than the administration session itself. You will need to consider preparation, the location of your administration session, transportation, lodging, the time you will remain in Colorado following the experience, and how integration will be supported after you return home.
Some aspects of preparation and integration may be conducted remotely when permitted under Colorado regulations, while the administration session itself takes place in Colorado at an authorized location.
Working with an independent licensed facilitator can also give you continuity throughout the process: you can establish the facilitator relationship before arriving in Colorado, work with that same facilitator during your administration session, and continue integration after you return home.
What Does a Licensed Natural Medicine Facilitator Do?
A licensed natural medicine facilitator is the professional responsible for supporting you throughout the regulated natural medicine process.
In Colorado, facilitators must meet state licensing requirements that include education and training, supervised practice, examinations, background checks, and continuing professional obligations. They are also required to follow rules governing professional conduct, participant safety, informed consent, boundaries, confidentiality, and the provision of natural medicine services.
Your relationship with a facilitator begins before you consume psilocybin. During preparation, the facilitator conducts required screening, provides information about the process and potential risks, discusses your intentions and needs, and works with you to prepare for the administration session.
During the administration session, the facilitator remains present and attentive throughout the experience. Facilitation does not require directing the content of the journey or telling a participant what their experience means. A facilitator may instead provide a supportive environment, respond to physical or emotional needs, offer assistance when appropriate, and maintain the conditions necessary for the participant to move through their own experience.
Afterward, the facilitator provides an opportunity for integration. This can include reflection, meaning-making, identifying questions that remain alive after the experience, and considering whether or how the experience may inform the participant’s life.
Facilitators differ considerably in their backgrounds, training, philosophy, and approach. Licensure establishes minimum professional and regulatory requirements; it does not mean that every facilitator practices in the same way. Choosing someone whose approach, experience, boundaries, and way of working feel appropriate for you is an important part of the process.
How Do I Choose a Licensed Psilocybin Facilitator?
Choosing a facilitator is about more than verifying that someone holds a license. You are choosing the person who will prepare with you, remain with you throughout an altered state of consciousness, respond if you become physically or emotionally vulnerable, and support you afterward.
Licensure matters, but so do experience, approach, boundaries, communication, and fit.
Verify their license and experience
Confirm that the facilitator holds an active Colorado Natural Medicine Facilitator license. Ask about their training, experience facilitating psychedelic experiences, and the populations or circumstances with which they have experience.
Understand their approach
Ask what facilitation actually looks like with them. Some facilitators are more directive while others take a largely non-directive approach. Ask how they respond to fear, emotional intensity, physical discomfort, silence, requests for support, and unexpected material during an experience.
Ask about touch and boundaries
Understand the facilitator’s policies around supportive touch, consent, physical boundaries, confidentiality, dual relationships, and communication before and after the administration session. These conversations should happen before you enter an altered state.
Pay attention to screening and preparation
Thorough screening and preparation are part of responsible facilitation. Be cautious of anyone who seems more interested in getting you into an administration session than understanding whether participation is appropriate for you.
Understand what is included
Ask what the facilitator’s fee includes, how much preparation and integration support is provided, whether healing center costs and natural medicine are separate, and what additional expenses you should anticipate.
Notice how the relationship feels
A consultation can tell you a great deal. You should have room to ask questions, disagree, express uncertainty, establish boundaries, and make your own decisions without being pressured or persuaded. Competence matters, and so does whether you trust the person who will be sitting beside you during the experience.
How Much Do Legal Psilocybin Services Cost in Colorado?
There is no single statewide price for regulated psilocybin services in Colorado. The total cost depends on the facilitator you choose, the amount of preparation and integration included, the licensed healing center where your administration session takes place, and the natural medicine provided for the session.
It is important to understand that these costs may be separate.
Facilitator fees may cover preparation, the administration session, integration, and communication or support surrounding the experience. Facilitators establish their own fees and may offer different service packages or payment structures.
Healing centers establish their own charges for use of the licensed administration space and related services. The cost of the natural medicine may also be separate from both the facilitator fee and the healing center fee.
When comparing costs, ask for a clear explanation of what is included and what additional expenses you should anticipate. A lower advertised price may not represent the full cost of participating in the regulated program.
Health insurance generally does not cover regulated psilocybin services, so participants should expect these services to be paid for out of pocket.
